A Lament

I am like a pelican of the wilderness;
I am like an owl of the desert.

But You are the same,
                             PSALM 102

I've tasted the bread of angels
and no clothes to tear

I am not worthy to stoop down

Even if I carry Your cross
as far as the Desert of Kadesh
for forty days and forty nights
- pelicans will not go with me
They will not eat my carcass
and the beasts of the earth
will be frightened

Blessed are the desert owls
for they see through the darkness

You have cut down
the cedars of Lebanon
and the mighty oaks of Bashan

give me their language

Until my wine is mingled with tears
And my bread is filled with ashes
